While aerobraking on dune I didn't need a heat shield but I don't think this will work on Jool. I've been running some aerobraking test trials on kerbin and seem to have issues with the rocket flipping and rolling with a heatshield while going through the atmosphere. Create a maneuver node a few hours before you encounter Laythe.
